Three Hundred Is the Magic Number…For Now!

In the world of sports, 300 has a certain ring. A 300 game in bowling is literally perfection. If you can maintain a lifetime batting average of .300, you’re practically a lock for the Baseball Hall of Fame. And pitchers who amass a total of 300 wins? It’s baseball immortality.

300 is on my mind, and not because I’m a lifetime sports fan. It’s because I just wrote my 300th Letter of Gratitude. In all candor, I consider it one of the most important achievements of my life. When reflecting on this improbable expedition into deep gratitude, it’s astonishing that I’ve stepped to the computer three hundred separate times over little more than a dozen years, to share gratitude, warm feelings and a sense of connection with an incredibly wide array of individuals, couples and groups.

Many letters have been sent to those no longer in our earthy realm. A smattering have been sent to individuals with whom I no longer have contact. A solid handful have been somewhat transactional in nature or sent to luminaries I admire. But the vast majority have been earmarked to those who have made and continue to make a positive, personal impact on my life.

I write about it, muse about it and speak about it from podiums at home and abroad. And I’ll say it here once again on this milestone occasion: It’s an intoxicating, addictive feeling, to share positive thoughts of gratitude with those who have helped you on your path. I’ll now commence the long, slow climb to four hundred letters. No telling if/when I’ll ever get there. But as has long been said about adventure or exotic travel, it’s not about the destination. It’s about the journey.

I too have realized how fortunate I have been and try to encourage others to be grateful.
The world could use more of this.

What do gratitude and altitude have in common? Great heights, and you have reached this milestone with a positive attitude and a grateful heart, dear Joel.
